Doll Closet handcrafted
from a wooden pear crate!

This unique doll closet was my Christmas present in 1954. My dad hand crafted this lovely, and well used, doll closet from a wooden pear crate.

Dad used a beige vinyl for the sides and attached it with brass tacks. The vinyl is present on the top, back, and two sides. He always used bright colored paints and in this case each drawer or door is a different color.

Clear glass door knobs were fashionable for home decor, so he used glass knobs for this cabinet.

The cabinet is 12 inches wide, 20 inches high, and 9 inches deep.

I used this work of art for my Terri Lee doll, my first doll. Later, in 1959, when Barbie was introduced by Mattel, I stored ensembles for both dolls.

I love making doll clothes, and I hope someone can make this for the clothes that you design and create.

My Uncle Harry made a larger wardrobe with a cherry finish .

Here are details about the chest from a wooden crate:

This is the smallest of the three drawers: Interior measurements are 2 inches by 2 inches by 7 3/4 inches. Dad used 1/4 inch plywood.

Here you can see the back side of the drawer, and the back of the front facing.

The lip on the drawer face fits flush against the interior compartment dividers.

See a closeup of the interior below:

The rod is a dark green, and difficult to see in this picture (sorry).

Dad used a 1/4 inch dowel for the closet rod. I was able to hang small hangers for Barbie clothes and larger hangers for Terri Lee clothes. This cabinet is ideal for American Girl doll clothes today!

The top shows how Dad used brass tacks to hold the vinyl. The tacks are 3/8 inch in diameter and are 1 inch apart. Vinyl completely covers the two sides and the back also.

I treasure this closet, and am happy that the Pear logo is visible on the bottom of this treasure!

Dad always paid attention to detail, as you can see here. He even painted the bottom board in the back with yellow paint to match the yellow trim on the front of the cabinet.

Dimensions of the other parts are:

Orange Drawer: 7 3/4 inches by 7 3/4 inches by 2 inches

Sliding Doors: 5 3/4 inches by 11 1/2 inches

Green Drawer: 10 3/4 inches by 7 3/4 inches by 2 inches

All of the above are made from 1/4 inch plywood.
