American Girl Knit Sandals
and Matching Handbag

Here an American Girl doll knit pattern for a pair of sandals. You can also make a matching handbag that doubles as a beach bag!

The soles of the sandals are made from foam craft sheets. I purchased a package of assorted colors from The Dollar Tree for $1.00. One 4 inch by 6 inch sheet will make one pair of sandals.

Here are the steps to making the sole of the shoes:

1) Trace the feet of your doll on a piece of paper.

2) Cut out the paper patterns.

3) Cut two pieces of foam for each foot.

Here is a picture of the 4 pieces that I made. The length is 2 3/4 inches, and the width at the widest part is 1 1/2 inches.

Set these aside and knit the upper band.

Upper Band Instructions

Gauge: 5 stitches = 1 inch using sport weight yarn and Size 5 Needles.

Make two, one for each foot.

Cast on 14 stitches.

Row 1: K.

Row 2: Inc 1, knit to last stitch, inc 1.

Row 3: K.

Bind off 14 stitches. Cut yarn length to about 7-8 inches. Thread yarn ends and insert needle through stitches so that the ends are in the center of the upper band width. Cut ends to 1/2 inch. You will be gluing these ends in between the foam layers of the soles for your sandals.

The next step is to glue the 1/2 inch yarn lengths and the edges of the knitted bands to the bottom of the top soles.

Place one of the cut soles against the bottom of the doll's foot. Lay the knitted band across her foot, and keep in place with double sided tape or pins. Repeat for the other foot.

The next step is to glue the soles to the sandals. Glue the plain pieces of foam to the upper soles, matching the shapes of the soles.

I tried using a white glue and also Super Glue. If you use white glue, you will have to hold the pieces together longer, or put them under heavy books or other weights. If they get wet, they will come apart. I prefer Super Glue because it is permanent, and you only have to press the pieces together for a few seconds.

This handbag is approximately 2 1/2 inches wide 1 3/4 inches deep, and can double as a beach bag. It is very easy to make, so get your needles and let's start!

This cute bag only takes a few yards of yarn and very little time, so please make the set to complete your American Girl doll's wardrobe.
