Want to see a doll closet that will fashionably store your American Girl doll clothes?
This beautiful wardrobe will hold many ensembles for an 18 inch doll. It was designed and hand crafted by my Uncle Harry in Youngstown, Ohio in 1955. My cousin Marilyn had a Patti Play Pal doll and she used this wardrobe to store Patti's clothes.
My uncle made this cherry cabinet after seeing the doll closet that my Dad had made for my Terri Lee and Barbie. Uncle Harry and Marilyn went home to design one for Marilyn's dolls. The family has pictures of them drawing the plans, and Uncle Harry building the wardrobe. Of course, there are many photos of the finished product, and a very happy eight year old owner of this unique piece.
The cabinet is 48 inches high and 23 inches wide, The bottom drawer is approximately 6 inches deep.
Inside the cabinet, there is a shelf, 8 inches from the ceiling, that is ideal for hats and shoes.
The hardware on the sliding doors matched the hardware on Marilyn's bedroom closets.
There is one closet rod inside.
A suggestion for a more modern interior would be to divide the interior in the middle, and have one high rod in half of the interior. On the opposite side, two rods could be planned, to accommodate many more blouses and shorter clothes. One could get creative with the drawer interiors also, and design compartments to hold shoes, socks, and intimate apparel. Three or four sections on the top shelf would allow for a neat arrangement of hats and folded sweaters.
