American Girl Doll
Accessories to Knit:
A Winter Cap and Shoulder Bag

Here you will find two American Girl Doll Accessories to knit:
1) A Winter Cap with Cables
2) A Shoulder Bag with Cable Accent and a Leather Button

Making stylish doll clothes for 18 inch dolls is so rewarding, especially when they are chic!

The cables are incorporated into the cap band, and a cable in the center of the purse flap creates a matching set.

I used two strands of 100% Merino wool yarn for the cap and three strands for the purse.

Below you will find instructions to knit these pieces.

Pattern for Cap

Use remnants to create this adorable set for your doll.

Gauge: 7 sts = 1 inch, 10 rows = 1 inch.

I used a Size 3 round needle for the bulk of the cap and then double pointed needles to finish the top.

Cast on 72 stitches. Knit in the round as follows:

Row 1: (K4,P2)*, repeat to end (11 repeats).

Row 2: (P4,K2)*, repeat 11 times.

Row 3: Repeat Row 1.

Row 4: (Put 2 sts on a holder in front of your work, K2, knit the 2 stitches from the holder, P2)*. Repeat * 11 times.

Row 5: Repeat Row 2.

Keep a marker at the start of a row, and continue knitting every row until the cap measures 2 1/4 inches from the start.

Decrease row: Keeping marker, (K10, K2tog)*, repeat * 5 times.

Next Row: Purl.

Note: As you are decreasing, it will be harder to used the single round needle. You will have to switch to using 4 double pointed needles. Three needles will hold the stitches and the fourth will be used to knit.

Continue decreasing every other row, maintaining 6 decreases per row. (The next decrease row will perform (K9, K2tog), the following decrease row pattern will be (K8, K2tog), etc.)

Continue decreasing 6 stitches per row until the pattern is (K1,K2tog). You will now have 18 sts.

Last row: K2tog 9 times. You now have 9 sts remaining. Cut yarn about 12 inches long and pull yarn through all 9 stitches. Thread a needle, knot on the inside, and bury the end.

Bury beginning yarn.

Embellishment: Using a single strand of Merino wool and size 0 needles, cast on 48 stitches. Use 2 needles.

Row 1: K

Row 2 and all even rows: P

Row 3: (K6, K2tog), repeat until end of row (6 decreases) - 42 sts.

Row 5: (K4, K2tog), repeat until end of row (7 decreases) - 35 sts.

Row 7: K2, (K1, K2tog)*, repeat * 10 times - 24 sts.

Row 9: K2tog across row - 12 sts.

Row 11: K2tog across - 6 sts remaining.

Cut yarn about 12 inches long and pull yarn through all 6 stitches. Stitch ends together, forming a gathered circle. Sew to cap, and add an accent button. Voila!

American Girl Doll accessories are fun to knit, and seeing the finished product is quite satisfying. What would complete a set for your doll better than a shoulder bag to match her hat?

I used three strands of Merino wool for this bag. The bag itself is knitted on Size 3 needles. The I-chord shoulder strap is done with two strands on Size 0 needles.

Here is a picture of the American Girl doll accessories, designed to a complete a winter ensemble: a coat knitted with 4 strands of Merino Wool along with the hat and shoulder bag from the pattern above.

The American Girl doll accessories required very little yarn, but the coat pattern that this doll is wearing requires at least 4 ounces of wool.

Do you want to get creative? You can design countless hats and bags using these basic instructions. Here are some suggestions for other American Girl doll accessories to knit:

- For a cap, begin with a classic ribbing (K2,P2), or use a seed stitch (K1,P1 on one row and P1,K1 on the next row to form a "seed" pattern.

- Use a variegated yarn to form stripes.

- For a shoulder bag, omit the buttonhole and use velcro closure. Use frilly yarn on the flap, or sew a flower on top of the flap.

Here is a bag I made with mohair and a fancy yarn on the flap.
